POSTER DESIGN
I created a show poster based on the orchestration, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, composed by Modest Mussorgsky. The suite consists of ten movements along with a recurring Promenade theme. The music depicts a tour of an exhibition of works by Viktor Hartmann, following his sudden death. The challenge is that each movement varied in mood and had little similar to one another. So, I chose to depict the Promenade theme that is played between each movement. The typography of the poster is positioned and cut up to symbolize a floor plan and the trailing headers are an abstraction of the tour through the exhibition floor.

Victor Hartmann's art
To form an understanding of the mood, I listened to the orchestration and conducted some research on Mussorgsky’s background and Victor Hartmann’s art.
I noticed the use of warm reds, oranges, and browns among Hartmann’s work and used that to influence the poster’s color palette. To formulate the poster's composition I sketched out ideas and I rearranged letters that I printed and cut-out.
